Mysuru: Global Cancer Observatory (GLOBOCAN) estimated 19.3 million cancer cases worldwide for the year 2020. India ranked third after China and United States of America (USA). GLOBOCAN predicted cancer cases in India would touch 2.08 million, accounting for a rise of 57.5 per cent in 2040 from 2020″, said Dr Madhavi, Senior Radiation Oncologist and Medical Superintendent, Bharath Hospital Institute of Oncology (BHIO).

As part of World Cancer Day, Bharath Cancer Hospital will be conducting Hope A Thon (Walkathon) which will be flagged off by Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar and cine actor Dhruva Sarja at Kote Anjaneya Swamy Temple on February 4 at 6.30 am.

Addressing media persons at BHIO new OPD building here on Wednesday Dr Madhavi, renowned Senior Radiation Oncologist said “World Cancer Day, observed annually on February 4, is a global initiative aimed at raising awareness about cancer, promoting early detection, prevention and treatment and advocating for improved access to healthcare services for cancer patients. It provides an opportunity for individuals, organizations and governments worldwide to unite in the fight against cancer. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Cancer has the second-highest death toll in the world. In fact, 1,300 Indians lose the battle against cancer every day. Every year number of new cases increasing so does our screening and awareness programme”.

In the year 2023, Bharath Cancer Hospital which was founded by Dr B S Ajaikumar in 1989 witnessed an unwavering dedication to its mission, evident in the staggering numbers: 3,500 new cases, 34,000 outpatient consultations, 30,000 radiation therapy sessions, 16,000 chemotherapy treatments and 1,550 successful surgeries. These statistics reflect not just the scale of the hospital’s operations but, more importantly, the countless lives it has touched and transformed since its inception in 1989 by Dr Ajaikumar. Bharath Cancer Hospital has secured its position as the second-largest cancer treating center in South Karnataka.

Adding to the arsenal of expertise was Dr Raxith Sringeri, Consultant Surgical Oncologist.

“In the battle against cancer, precision is paramount. Our surgical interventions aim not just for removal but for restoration of hope and quality of life,” stated Dr Sringeri.

He also quoted that a legacy of care spanning 33 years, where each day is a testament to our unwavering commitment to healing and hope with utmost surgical precision.

With advent of multi-disciplinary treatment approaches in BHIO we able to do 250 organ preservation surgeries like breast conservative surgery, Anterior resection and many so patients have good quality life.

Dr Abhilash, Consultant Medical Oncologist, who also spoke on the occasion said “The smart and strategic approach to medical interventions is a testament to the hospital’s commitment to comprehensive cancer care. Each treatment plan is not just a prescription; it’s a personalised strategy tailored to empower the patient on their journey to recovery,”.

Dr Srinivas K G, Consultant Medical Oncologist, Dr Vijay Kumar M, Consultant Surgical Oncologist, Dr Vinayakumar Muttagi, Consultant Radiation Oncologist and Gowtham Dhamerla, Chief Of Operations, BHIO were also present.

Awareness talk and walkathon: As part of World Cancer Day, Bharath Hospital and Institute of Oncology is conducting awareness talks at various institutions and firms. For walkathon which will be held on February 4 at 6.30 am, participants from various colleges and institutions are expected to take part.
