For the first time, astronomers have clocked how fast neutron stars drive powerful jets into space.

What jets? Cosmic beams that are launched when dust or gas gravitate towards dense objects, like neutron stars (the remnants of a once-massive star). How fast? According to a team of astronomers, about one-third the speed of light.

An important role in the universe

In an article penned in The Conversation, James Miller-Jones, a Professor at Curtin University and co-author of the study, explained that the jets carry away gravitational energy released by the infalling gas.
